These are the 50 verbs you need most often in polite Japanese, each in three forms: teineigo (the ます form you use with everyone), sonkeigo (respectful, for what the other person does) and kenjougo (humble, for what you do towards them). Verbs with a special respectful or humble verb are marked, the rest follow the お〜になる and お〜する patterns. Press ▶ to hear any form. For the rules behind the forms, the Japanese keigo guide is the place to start; this page is the list.
In short
- Learn the 25 verbs with special forms first: they replace the plain verb outright (行く becomes いらっしゃる or 参る).
- Everything else is a pattern: お + stem + になる to raise the other person, お + stem + する to lower yourself.
- Use the quiz below to check the one thing learners mix up most, whose action the sentence is about.

How to read the table
- Sonkeigo describes the other person’s action: 部長がいらっしゃいます (the manager is coming). Never use it for yourself.
- Kenjougo describes your own action, or your company’s, towards the other person: 明日参ります (I will come tomorrow).
- Patterns work on most verbs: お + ます-stem + になる (お待ちになる), お + ます-stem + する (お待ちする). Sino-Japanese する verbs take ご instead of お in the humble form (ご連絡する) and なさる in the respectful form (連絡なさる).
- 〜させていただく is the humble form for things you do with the other person’s permission or for their benefit: 使わせていただきます (I will use it, with your permission).
- Where a cell says no form exists, say it another way: for くれる there is no humble form because you are the receiver, so you use いただく.
Keigo conversion quiz: whose action is it?
Ten situations. Pick the form that fits. The explanation appears after you answer.
1. Your section chief is coming to the meeting. You tell a colleague. Plain verb: 来る
The chief is above you, so their action takes sonkeigo: いらっしゃる. 参る is humble and would lower the chief.
2. You are going to the client’s office tomorrow. You tell the client. Plain verb: 行く
Your own action towards the client takes kenjougo: 参る (or 伺う for a visit). お行きする is not a form.
3. You ask a customer whether they have seen the brochure. Plain verb: 見る
The customer’s action takes ご覧になる. 拝見する is what you say about your own looking.
4. You will look at the customer’s form now. Plain verb: 見る
Your own action: 拝見する. ご覧になる would honour yourself.
5. You offer a guest a cup of tea. Plain verb: 飲む
The guest drinks, so 召し上がる. いただく is humble, for yourself.
6. You give your name at a reception desk. Plain verb: 言う
Saying your own name is your action: 申す. おっしゃる is for the other person.
7. You ask your teacher whether they know about the schedule change. Plain verb: 知る
The teacher’s knowing takes ご存じ. 存じる and 知っておる lower the speaker.
8. You tell a client you will send the file this afternoon. Plain verb: 送る
Sending to the client is your action: お送りする. お送りになる would honour yourself.
9. Your manager gave the presentation. You report it to a visitor. Plain verb: する
The manager’s action in front of an outsider: in a strict in-group reading you would humble your own company, but when speaking to a visitor about a superior by title, なさる is the safe choice taught in textbooks; いたす is for your own action.
10. You will visit the client’s office tomorrow. Plain verb: 訪ねる
Visiting someone of higher status is your action: 伺う. 参られる mixes a humble verb with a respectful ending.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between sonkeigo and kenjougo?
Sonkeigo (respectful language) raises the other person: you use it for what your boss, customer or teacher does, such as いらっしゃる for “to come”. Kenjougo (humble language) lowers yourself: you use it for what you do towards them, such as 参る for “to come”. Teineigo (polite language) is the plain です and ます style, which you use for everyone.
Which keigo verbs should I learn first?
The special verbs, because they replace the plain verb completely: いらっしゃる, おっしゃる, 召し上がる, ご覧になる and なさる for respectful speech, and 参る, 申す, いただく, 拝見する and いたす for humble speech. Those ten cover going, coming, being, saying, eating, drinking, seeing and doing, which is most of what comes up in a workplace.
How do I make keigo for a verb that has no special form?
Use the patterns. Respectful: お + verb stem + になる (お待ちになる), or 〜なさる for する verbs (連絡なさる). Humble: お + verb stem + する (お待ちする), ご + Sino-Japanese noun + する (ご連絡する), or 〜させていただく when you do something with the other person’s permission (使わせていただく).
Is it wrong to use the れる form instead of お〜になる?
No. 行かれる, 話される and 書かれる are also sonkeigo, one level lighter than お〜になる and common in offices. The problem is only when the same ending is read as the passive, so with a verb like 食べる most speakers prefer 召し上がる.
Can I use this list for the JLPT?
Yes. Keigo verbs appear from N4 upward in the vocabulary and grammar sections, and N3 and N2 reading passages use them in business settings. The level column shows where each verb first appears; the special verbs are worth knowing at N4 even if your textbook leaves them to N3.
Last reviewed November 6, 2026. The forms follow standard keigo references (the special verbs and the お〜になる, お〜する, 〜なさる, 〜いたす and 〜させていただく patterns); JLPT levels are the level at which each plain verb is usually taught, since the JLPT publishes no official word lists.
