How it works

Takes about two minutes to figure out.

JLPT level selection screen in My Senpai Crossword showing N5 through N1 difficulty options

Pick your level, not someone else's.

Choose from N5 everyday basics to N1 near-fluent vocabulary. Every puzzle is generated fresh on your device from a curated JLPT wordlist, so no two sessions are the same and the difficulty stays consistent with your level.

Romaji-to-hiragana conversion guide showing how typing "tsu" produces the hiragana character つ

Type romaji. We handle the kana.

Just spell out the pronunciation you already know. For example, 'kyou' lands as きょう, 'tsu' as つ, 'sha' as しゃ. The conversion engine handles every compound kana and long vowel automatically. You never have to memorise the hiragana layout to play.

Recall, not recognition.

Every clue is a real JLPT word with its English gloss. Recalling the right kana spelling in context is different from recognising it on a flashcard. The former tends to stick. The latter mostly doesn't.

FAQ

Common questions.

Is it free?

Yes. The web puzzle is free every day. The native app is free with optional in-app purchases for unlimited plays.

Do I need an account?

No. The web and app both work without sign-up. Progress is stored locally on your device.

What is the difference between the web version and the app?

The web version gives you one new puzzle each day. The native app gives you the full archive, offline play, and per-level streaks.

Which JLPT levels are covered?

N5 through N1. After picking the level, the puzzle is generated on-device from a curated JLPT wordlist for that level.

Does it work offline?

Ad-free users can play fully offline. No connection needed once the app is installed. Ad-supported play requires a brief network connection at puzzle start to load the ad. The web version always requires a connection.

I do not know hiragana yet. Can I still play?

Yes. The romaji helper shows you what each kana sounds like, and you can type romaji at any time. The engine converts it for you.
