My Senpai Crossword

How the daily Japanese crossword works

My Senpai Crossword is a daily Japanese crossword for learners. Every clue is an English meaning, every answer is a JLPT word, and you type the reading in romaji while the grid fills in hiragana. This page explains the clues, the input, the levels and the ways to play.

An N5 puzzle in progress: an English clue at the top and hiragana answers filling the grid

Reading a clue and typing romaji

The clue is the meaning of the answer, for example "next week". You type the reading in romaji and each sound becomes a kana square. The cursor moves on to the next word by itself.

Choosing a JLPT level

Pick N5 to N1 and a fresh 20×20 grid is built on your phone from the words tagged for that level, so an N4 puzzle only asks for N4 words. Answers are written in kana, which means even N1 puzzles test whether you can produce the reading, not just recognise the kanji.

LevelWordsExample clue and answer
N5 Beginner614newspaper → しんぶん (新聞)
N4 Elementary621earthquake → じしん (地震)
N3 Intermediate1,908to reach → とどく (届く)
N2 Upper intermediate1,541snowstorm → ふぶき (吹雪)
N1 Advanced3,069enthusiasm → ねつい (熱意)

That makes 7,753 words in all. About 340 words that sat at the wrong level were moved in October 2026; see the crossword updates.

What players have said

The crossword has only a few store reviews so far, so there is no separate reviews page yet. Two App Store reviews, one happy and one not:

Really like the idea of learning vocabulary through crosswords instead of just flashcards. It makes practicing Japanese feel more like a game and is actually fun to use. Clean and simple too!

N. · 5 of 5 stars · App Store review · September 2026

The virtual keyboard [they] force you to use is horrible: it's laggy, shows no feedback, and seems to miss presses.

S. · 2 of 5 stars · App Store review · August 2026

What changed after the second review: version 1.0.34 (App Store, 17 August 2026) let the puzzle use the phone's own keyboard. The romaji keyboard is still the default, and Settings switches between the two.

Crossword questions

How do I type Japanese answers?

Type the reading in romaji, the English-letter spelling of each sound. Type kyou and the squares fill with きょう. No Japanese keyboard is needed; in the app you can also switch to your phone's own keyboard, including a Japanese IME.

Do I need to know hiragana to play?

No. You type romaji and the grid shows kana, and a built-in romaji chart shows what each kana sounds like. Knowing the kana first makes the grid easier to read.

How many puzzles are free each day?

The daily puzzle is free in the browser and in the app. The app adds 3 free practice puzzles a day at any level and 1 free puzzle with a friend, with ads.

Can two people solve the same puzzle?

Yes. In the app, Play with someone lets you join someone waiting at your level, open a puzzle for anyone, or send a friend a link or a 6-character code. You both fill in the same grid live, each on your own phone.

What do Ad-Free and Unlimited change?

Ad-Free removes the ads and lets you play fully offline. Unlimited removes the daily limits on practice puzzles and puzzles with a friend. The Bundle has both. All three are one-time purchases, not subscriptions.
