JLPT Vocabulary Builder

This is a free Japanese crossword puzzle that runs entirely in your browser. You type romaji — the standard Latin-alphabet spelling of Japanese sounds — and the puzzle converts your input to hiragana automatically. Type ka and the cell fills with か. Type shi and you get し. No Japanese keyboard setup required.
Puzzles are generated from actual JLPT vocabulary lists across five difficulty levels: N5 (beginner), N4 (elementary), N3 (intermediate), N2 (pre-advanced), and N1 (advanced). Every puzzle is different. Clues are in English, so you are working from meaning to hiragana — the direction that matters when you are trying to recall a word, not just recognize it.
The app also tracks which words you have seen across sessions — if your browser allows local storage. Words you have practiced recently drop to the back of the queue; vocabulary you have not seen in a while surfaces more often. It is a lightweight form of spaced repetition that works without an account, a login, or any data leaving your device.
N5 puzzles draw from around 800 core words: numbers, colors, family terms, common verbs, basic nouns. Start here if you can read hiragana but your vocabulary is still thin.
N3 covers roughly 3,750 words. Expect everyday conversation terms and compound words. This is where passive recognition stops being enough.
N2 and N1 pull from vocabulary found in news, business contexts, and academic writing. If a clue leaves you staring for thirty seconds, that is the point.
