YoMoo: Read & Shadow Japanese
YoMoo Privacy Policy
This policy explains what information the YoMoo app (iOS, Android and web) collects, why, and the choices you have. My SenpAI LLC ("we", "us") publishes YoMoo.
- YoMoo has no accounts. We never ask for your name or email.
- Photos and documents you scan are processed on your device. We never upload them.
- Your saved words, reading history and imported text stay on your device.
- The free version shows ads through Google AdMob. The optional Ad-Free subscription is handled by Apple or Google, with RevenueCat.
- We use Firebase to measure usage and crashes.
Information we collect
| Information | Why we use it | Who processes it |
|---|---|---|
| Requests for articles, reading passages and dictionary data. Our server records standard log data such as IP address, time and content requested. | Delivering reading content to the app | Our server at my-senpai.com (Amazon Web Services, Tokyo) |
| Subscription status and purchase history, linked to a random app user ID that RevenueCat creates. This ID is not your name or email. | Checking whether you have Ad-Free, and restoring it on a new device | RevenueCat, Apple, Google |
| Usage events (screens viewed, features used, lesson or puzzle results, purchase and ad events), app version, device model, OS version, language, approximate country/region derived from your IP address, and an app-instance identifier | Understanding which features are used and fixing problems | Google Firebase Analytics |
| Crash reports: stack traces, device state at the time of the crash, and an installation identifier | Finding and fixing crashes | Google Firebase Crashlytics |
| Advertising identifier (IDFA on iOS only if you allow tracking; Android Advertising ID), IP address, device information, and ad interactions | Showing ads, limiting how often you see the same ad, measuring ad performance, and preventing fraud | Google AdMob |
Information that stays on your device
- Photos and camera scans: text is recognized on your device by Apple's Vision framework (iOS) or Google's on-device ML Kit text recognizer (Android). The image is not sent to us.
- Files and text you import or paste
- Saved words, flashcards, reading history, stats and settings
- Text-to-speech: read-aloud uses the voices built into your device
Deleting the app deletes this information.
Device permissions
- Camera: to scan Japanese text. Used only when you choose to take a photo.
- Photos: to scan text from an image you pick. The app can see only the photos you select.
- Tracking (iOS): see Advertising.
You can turn off any permission in your device settings. Scanning stops working, but the rest of the app does not.
Advertising
The free version of YoMoo shows ads through Google AdMob. Google and its advertising partners may use your device's advertising identifier and similar information to show ads, including ads based on your interests, and to measure ad performance. See How Google uses information from apps that use its services.
- iPhone and iPad: the app asks for permission before it uses your advertising identifier (App Tracking Transparency). If you tap "Ask App Not to Track", ads are still shown but are not personalized with that identifier. You can change this anytime in Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking.
- Android: you can reset or delete your advertising ID in Settings → Google → Ads (the exact path varies by device).
- European Economic Area, UK and Switzerland: the app shows Google's consent form before personalized ads are used. To change your choice later, reinstall the app or clear its data, and the form will appear again.
Ad-Free subscription
YoMoo offers optional auto-renewing Ad-Free subscriptions (monthly and annual). Apple or Google processes the payment, and we never receive your payment details. RevenueCat receives the purchase receipt and your random app user ID so it can confirm your subscription. You can manage or cancel your subscription in your Apple ID or Google Play account settings.
Service providers we use
These companies process data on our behalf, or as independent providers, to make YoMoo work. Each has its own privacy policy:
- Google Firebase Analytics and Crashlytics (Firebase privacy and security, Google Privacy Policy)
- Google AdMob: advertising and the consent form (How Google uses information from apps that use its services)
- RevenueCat: subscription management (RevenueCat Privacy Policy)
- Apple and Google: in-app purchases and on-device text recognition (Apple Privacy Policy, Google Privacy Policy)
- Amazon Web Services: hosting for our content server (AWS Privacy Notice)
We do not sell your personal information for money. Personalized advertising through AdMob may count as "sharing" or "targeted advertising" under some US state privacy laws. You can opt out by turning off ad tracking as described in the Advertising section.
We may also disclose information if the law requires it, to protect the rights and safety of our users or others, or as part of a merger or sale of the business (in which case this policy continues to apply to your information).
How long we keep information
- Subscription records: kept by RevenueCat while needed to provide and restore your subscription, and as required for tax and accounting.
- Analytics and crash data: kept for the retention period set in Google Analytics and Firebase, then deleted automatically.
- Server logs: kept for a limited time for security and troubleshooting.
Your choices and rights
YoMoo has no account, so most of your data exists only on your device. Deleting the app removes it. To ask us to delete subscription or analytics data linked to your device, email us. It helps if you include your purchase receipt so we can find the right records.
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, delete or get a copy of your personal information, to object to or restrict certain processing, to withdraw consent, and to opt out of targeted advertising. This includes residents of the European Economic Area and the UK (GDPR), California and other US states with privacy laws, and Japan (APPI). To make a request, email [email protected]. We will respond within the time the law requires and will not treat you differently for using these rights. If you are in the EEA or UK, you can also complain to your local data protection authority.
Where the GDPR applies, we process data to provide the app you asked for (contract), to keep it working, secure and improving (legitimate interests), and for personalized ads and similar uses only with your consent.
Children
YoMoo is a general-audience learning app and is not directed at children under 13 (or the minimum age required in your country). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under that age. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
Where information is processed
My SenpAI LLC is registered in the United States. Our servers and service providers are located in the United States, Japan and other countries, so your information may be processed outside the country where you live. When we transfer personal information from the EEA or UK, we rely on our providers' legal transfer mechanisms, such as the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses.
Security
We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect information, including encrypted connections to our account and analytics providers. No system is perfectly secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we will post the new version on this page and update the effective date. If a change is significant, we will also tell you in the app or on the app's store listing.
